The Best Colored Gemstones to Use in Engagement Rings

Your relationship is far from ordinary, so why not let your engagement ring reflect the unique qualities of your love?

Remember the advertising campaign that declared “a diamond is forever”? Savvy marketing like this has contributed to the diamond’s frequent use in engagement rings. However, diamonds aren’t the only popular choice for engagement rings. Many couples like create their own customized rings using colored gemstones as an alternative to diamonds. Below are some of the most popular and most beautiful gemstones to use in engagement rings.

Sapphires are a symbol of sovereigns and sophistication. Perhaps the most famous sapphire engagement ring in history decorated the lovely finger of the late Princess Diana. Later, Prince William gave this same ring to Kate Middleton when they became engaged. Sapphires resonate royalty and refinement, and they are one of the most popular alternatives to diamond engagement rings.

Mark Schneider, one of our popular jewelry artisans, captures a sense of eternal motion with his award-winning “Vision” sapphire engagement ring in 14K white gold set with a 1.55ct oval blue sapphire and 0.245cttw diamonds.

Sapphires come in a wide range of colors. In fact, every color except red. You’ll find gorgeous sapphires in yellow, pink, purple, green and every hue in between.

Here's one of our favorite colored sapphires -- an icy-cool lavender Montana sapphire in a vintage styled and hand-engraved 14k white gold set by designer Gordon Clark. Its shape and color reflect a unique sense of timeless love. The beauty and durability of a sapphire make it a terrific alternative gem for your one-of-a-king engagement ring.

Rubies have long been associated with love and affairs of the heart. It’s the stone Elizabeth Taylor wore in one of her most iconic rings, a gift from Richard Burton. Its hardness and durability is comparable to a sapphire. Fine rubies are considered to be exceptionally rare and precious.

A ruby is an excellent choice because not only is it durable, but it goes well with any setting and metal color. If you opt to use a ruby and diamond engagement ring, the red perfectly contrasts with the white diamond, adding a spark of color representative of fire and passion. It’s equally lovely in both a vintage and contemporary setting.

Aquamarine adds subtle elegance to an engagement ring. A member of the Beryl family, fine aqua has mirror-bright facets and comes in a range of pale blues often with just a hint of green. It is tough enough for daily wear and looks lovely in white gold or for a vintage flavor try a blush of rose gold. We just received a collection of new jewelry featuring Aquamarine. So new it’s not even on the website yet. You’ll have to stop in to see.

A cousin of Aquamarine, Morganite has many of the same crystalline attributes but in a delicate pink hue. It is especially lovely in rose gold. Our newest jewelry collection described above also features some one of a kind Morganite rings and earrings.
