Safety Tips to Avoid Damaging Your Jewelry

We have bad news, you are surrounded by jewelry hazards.

As warm weather approaches let's take a special moment of silence for earrings lost in the ocean, rings lost while gardening and all other jewelry lost and damaged while enjoying warm weather.

Know When to Remove Your Jewelry

  1. Before going into a swimming pool or hot tub. Chemicals such as chlorine can discolor and damage precious metals like gold, platinum and silver, as well as precious gemstones.
  2. Before applying lotion, bug spray, and sunscreen. Sprays and lotions can make your jewelry look dull and dingy as it gets stuck in the nooks and crannies of ring prongs and chains.
  3. Before gardening and any strenuous activity. Gloves, dirt, and many activities that involve using your hands can be abrasive and damage your jewelry.
  4. In Water. As your body temperature fluctuates, fingers can shrink, earrings can slip out and before you know it, gone forever

Caring for Your Jewelry

Visit your local jewelry store to have your jewelry inspected for loose gemstones, clasps, and prongs. These regular check-ups and deep cleanings can keep your jewelry in great shape!

  • Have your jewelry cleaned regularly. You can do this with your local jeweler or create your own jewelry cleaner.

  • Watch for warning signs. From rattling gemstones in rings and bracelets to bent earrings posts, its important to repair before you lose anything.
  • Insure your favorite jewelry. Knowing that your jewelry is completely protected during your adventures, you can rest easy.
