Clay Zava and Susan Drake - A Talented Team of Fine Jewelry Designers

Oscar Wilde once said, “One should either be a work of art or wear a work of art.”  As every person is a unique creation, it seems only appropriate to accent that beauty with the singular radiance of gems, the earth’s most wondrous works of art. Mankind has had a love of colored gemstones since the first hominid came across pretty colored pebbles on the beach. The process of faceting or cutting those gems was inspired by the natural shapes of many of the crystals and for over a thousand years faceting gems has been improving in design, symmetry, form and polish as the technology became available.

Local jeweler, Star Sosa, drew inspiration for her store name, Spectrum Fine Jewelry, from a prestigious colored gem and jewelry competition known as the Spectrum Awards as an homage to her love of fine colored gemstones.  Spectrum Fine Jewelry has long had a reputation for unusual and exotic gems, and as such they partner with an exceptional array of artists working with colored gemstones. They even host events devoted to gems, providing opportunities for others to learn about and acquire truly collectible items.  One such event will feature world renowned gem cutter, Clay Zava of Zava Mastercuts.

Award-winning craftsman, Clay Zava began cutting gemstones as a hobby over 35 years ago.  It was something Clay and his grandmother did together, neither ever suspecting it would become his career.  While in college Clay studied anthropology, getting his degree from the University of Tennessee.  He also loved music, playing several instruments and performing professionally.  In an exciting twist of events music has become his hobby, and the gem cutting has become his career.  He has received accolades on many levels, winning over a dozen national awards for his gemstone creations and cutting skills. In addition, over forty jewelry designs by various designers, featuring Clay’s spectacular gemstones have received awards.

One such designer who has collaborated with Clay and won numerous awards is Susan Drake, the lead jewelry designer at Spectrum Fine Jewelry.  Before joining Spectrum Fine Jewelry, Susan had won a number of design competitions, and every winning creation featured colored gems by Clay Zava.  Since joining the Spectrum team, Susan has received eight more national design awards and all but one were with Clay Zava gemstones.  Susan Drake has now received thirteen national design awards in her lifetime.

Clearly this is a match made in heaven. Spectrum will be hosting a gem show and design event on July 9th and 10th, featuring the creations and collaborations of Clay Zava and Susan Drake.  Come see for yourself the magic that occurs when exceptional gems meet artistic jewelry design.  There will be jewelry and loose gems available for sale and Susan Drake will be available for design appointments on Thursday or Friday.  These are limited, so book yours as soon as possible. You will receive a $100 coupon for either a Clay Zava gem or a Susan Drake design by making your appointment in advance. For more information, call the store at 910-256-2323 ex2.

Maybe it is a legacy piece that bridges the years between generations. Your engagement ring, wedding ring or anniversary ring each have a special history. How do you begin to place a dollar value on those pieces, especially heirlooms from decades past?
