The Passionate Life of North Carolina Painter, Chip Hemingway

Chip Hemingway is one of those people who meanders through the world with both sides of his brain on fire. He deeply relates to color, numbers, light, design and dimension because, in the end, they are all related. He's also a bit of a wordsmith as a singer-songwriter. He draws much of his inspiration from nature, John Prine, Bob Dylan, and his beloved pochade art box which he keeps with him at all times. He never knows when the notion will strike, the light will be prefect, or he'll find the best vantage point.

As a lifelong surfer, Chip has observed the dance between the light and the sea from his board. He knows what the sun, the moon, the tide and a storm can do to the landscape. He knows marshes like the back of his hand and the Masonboro area is a favorite haunt. He's been known to come out of the water to paint when it feels right. Salt water is as much a part of him as his family, art, design, or music.

Chip has intentionally designed his life so that he gets to spend time on all of the things he loves so passionately. Painting is way up there. He tries to paint everyday, even if it's just 20 minutes. His studio is in a barn behind his home that he shares with his wife Kimi and their three young boys. His easel stays up, along with his art, guitars, surfboards and many other things he loves.

"As a principal architect at Bowman Murray Hemingway Architects in Wilmington, Hemingway has designed or renovated numerous high-profile, coastal-area buildings. He designed the renovations and additions at all three North Carolina Aquariums, oversaw the preservation of the Oregon Inlet Life-Saving Station on Hatteras Island, and managed projects at Roanoke Island Festival Park. One project — North Carolina Aquarium’s $26 million Jennette’s Pier facility in Nags Head — brought him to the Outer Banks two days a week for two years."-Our State Magazine

Chip's art can be seen at Spectrum Gallery. If you own a painting by Chip Hemingway, you can be sure that it's from the best vantage point with the perfect light, sprinkled with passion on top!
