Story Time with Jewelry Designer James Carter

April 27, 2015

Our next Jewelry Event is with James Carter!  Not only does James make stunning cloisonne enamel jewelry, he is full of interesting stories, many of which are reflected in his jewelry. Here are a few of those stories:

"I love old buildings, I like the stories they tell in the layers of paint and the worn down wood.  I have always used antique architectural ornament in my work. They are charismatic mechanics borrowed from a bygone era that work with the contemporary aspects of my metalwork and enamel."

" 'Our house'  is a house built in Seagrove Beach, Florida.  This is what I saw when I looked from the outside to the interior...Cyprus columns, tile floors, potted plants and spiral trim along the roof line."

-James Carter

"The devastation of Hurricane Katrina had an impact on me, my family and my work for several years.  When the levee broke, it washed away the New Orleans that my wife called home and the city that had influenced my work for years.  Two weeks after the storm, I went over to help friends salvage what they could.  I packed up several old pine boards that had been a part of the house my wife grew up in."

"A year later, I knew I had to make some work about Katrina.  But how could I make something beautiful from so much destruction?  When I heard that my favorite restaurant, Mandinas had reopened, I knew it would be ok.  Hence the title, Rebirth."

"I grew up in Coastal Florida, working on fishing boats, and ships.  Sometimes when I would leave for long periods of time I would look out of the window of a house or the porthole of a ship and be transferred back. Hence the window would always be my portal to home."
- James Carter
