Aquamarine: March's Birthstone

March 20, 2015

Those lucky enough to be born in March get to enjoy one of the calendar's most spectacular birth stones – the Aquamarine. Named after the beautiful blue waters of the sea, the aquamarine boasts a fresh watery-blue hue that's crisp and cool.

A Stone to Tame the Waves and Other Legends

Aquamarine gems have long been tied to the oceans because of its light blue-green hue, which like the green color of the Emerald, comes from the mineral Beryl. In fact, many sailors throughout time have trusted the aquamarine to keep the waves calm during their travels. As such, they would carry the sky blue gems with them while navigating the deep blue seas.

According to other legends, aquamarine protected those who wore it from foes, whether in battle or in litigation. It was often believed that March's birthstone would render the wearer unconquerable, wise, and amiable.

In addition to being March's birthstone, the aquamarine is also the gem that's associated with the 19th wedding anniversary.

Where Does Aquamarine Come From?

Aquamarine gems are not cultivated anywhere in the United States. They are predominantly mined in Thailand, Brazil, Nigeria, Zambia, Mozambique, Madagascar, and from the Karakoram Mountains in Pakistan.

Today, synthetic versions of aquamarine gems are also available. They feature the same chemical, physical, and visual properties as genuine stones but they are created by man in a laboratory.

The Everlasting Allure of the Aquamarine

One of the most alluring characteristics of the aquamarine is that is one of the most transparent gems in the world. Its exceptional transparency lends it a vitreous luster that delivers a one-of-a-kind sparkle that's matched by few gems outside of the diamond. As a result, the quality of the cut has a significant effect on the aquamarine's brilliance.
